Contact Supervision with Family Support Workers

Safe, structured, and child-focused family time

At Family Safeguarding Assessments, we understand that family contact can be an emotional and complex experience, especially when supervision is required.

Our service provides a safe and supportive environment for children to spend meaningful time with parents, carers, or relatives, while ensuring their well-being and safety remaining the top priority.  This includes ongoing arrangements, as well as one off occasions.

We combine professional supervision, with family support to create contact sessions that are positive, nurturing, and reflective of each family’s individual circumstances.

What Our Service Offers

  • Supervised Contact Sessions
Structured and monitored sessions where our trained Family Support Workers oversee contact between children and family members. Every session is guided by safeguarding principles and an understanding of the child’s emotional needs.
  • Supported Contact
For situations where full supervision is not required but a steady guiding presence is beneficial, our practitioners will provide gentle oversight, emotional support, and guidance to help families build trust and stability.
  • Handover Support
We facilitate safe transitions at the start and end of contact sessions when direct communication between parents or carers is not appropriate. This ensures children experience calm, consistent exchanges without tension or conflict.
  • Community and Venue-Based Contact
We can arrange contact in family-friendly community spaces or at approved venues. The focus is always on providing a calm, neutral setting that helps children feel at ease and allows parents to engage naturally.
  • Observation and Reporting
After each session, our Family Support Workers provide clear, factual reports capturing the quality of interaction, engagement, and any areas of concern or progress. Reports can be shared with local authorities, solicitors, or the courts where required.

Our Approach

Our approach is built on four key principles:

  1. Child-Centred Practice  Every contact arrangement begins with the child’s safety, comfort, and emotional needs.
  2. Independence and Integrity As an independent service, our role is to ensure impartiality and transparency throughout the process.
  3. Empathy and Structure, we balance warmth and empathy with clear professional boundaries, ensuring contact remains safe, purposeful, and consistent.
  4. Partnership Working. We collaborate with parents, carers, local authorities, and legal professionals to ensure the best possible outcome for each child.

All practitioners are trained, experienced, and DBS-checked, with additional skills in safeguarding, family engagement, and working with children who have experienced trauma or disruption.

When Contact Supervision Is Needed

Our service can support families when:

  • A court or local authority has directed that contact must be supervised or supported, or self-referrals directly from parents.

  • There are safeguarding or welfare concerns requiring professional oversight.
  • Families are rebuilding relationships following separation, care proceedings, or periods of absence.
  • Professionals require objective, evidence-based observation reports on contact sessions.
  • Children would benefit from structured and supportive family time within a safe environment.

The Process

  1. Referral and Planning
We gather background information, risk assessments, and the purpose of contact to ensure sessions are carefully planned around the child’s needs.
  2. Introductory Meeting
We meet with parents, carers, or professionals to agree session details, venues, and reporting requirements.
  3. Supervised Contact Sessions
Our Family Support Workers oversee and facilitate contact, providing emotional support where necessary and ensuring safe, positive interaction.
  4. Observation and Reporting
If requested, a written report will be completed after each session, detailing observations in a clear, factual, and professional format.
  5. Review and Progression
Contact arrangements can be reviewed regularly, adapting supervision levels as trust, stability, and progress are demonstrated.
